As the school year winds down and the weeks start to become a little monotonous, one final event comes around for the whole school to enjoy together before everyone heads away for the summer. Being the final dance of the year, prom is a big event for some, though not as big of an event as past proms, or in fact, other proms around the state. But South High students have learned that, while it may not be as extravagant as others, prom can still be a day that everyone looks forward to. Unlike many of the other activities held during the school year, prom is not hosted by student council or any individual club. The Junior class officers are the ones who organize, decorate, decide ticket prices, and all the other small details that go into making a dance successful. This is no small feat, considering that there are typically only four class officers, sometimes less than that, who have to plan an entire event. This is done with the help of Mrs. Pauly, the reading specialist in room 123. Having been the advisor for prom for many years, she knows her way around a dance. As is tradition with most proms, long floor length dresses are encouraged. Though most students wait until their junior year to brave the sweeping dresses, all are encouraged to wear them in an attempt to make prom a more formal event. But where can ladies buy one of these gowns for a decent price? You would be surprised at the many different stores that offer dresses of these kinds right here in town. Deb, a store found in Memorial Mall, is a popular spot for dress buying for any occasion. Here you can find dresses of all styles, colors, lengths and sizes. And for a steal as well. This is a spot where you can find something for everyone, and they also offer plus sizes unlike other stores in the area. Found in the same mall, Kohl’s also gets dresses around the prom season. While they are a little bit more expensive than Deb, they have a nice range of long dresses if that is something you are interested in buying. A couple miles away in Deertrace Mall, you can venture to Boston Store. The priciest of the bunch, this store offers a lot of variety of dresses while still keeping up with the latest styles. Long dresses, short dresses, sequins, stripes; whatever you want they have it! Sometimes girls settle for staying in town to shop, but other times venturing out to other malls is the best choice. “I like buying dresses from out of town stores because then there is a better chance that I won’t have the same one as someone else!” Sophomore Jessika McNellis said. And don’t think that you’re off the hook, boys, for looking nice for the dance. While tuxedos are only required for the junior court nominees, if you want to compliment your dates fancy ensemble and look like a stunner yourself, it’s not a bad idea to get yourself one. Otherwise, the standard dress pants, button down shirt and tie work as well. Tuxedos can be bought at many local stores around town, the closest being DuBois downtown. If you want to mix it up a little, its never a bad idea to step out of the box with your clothing choice. For example, this past homecoming some senior boys decided to tie-dye dress shirts and picked a tie to match. “We wanted to stand out and we knew no one had done this before,” said Senior Tyler Zietz. Or there’s always the bow tie route, which is a little more classic and old school than the traditional tie. For the ladies, its easier to be more versatile with your dresses. Long, short, red, blue; it’s easy to pick something unique to wear depending on where you look! Story/Photo by Briana Wojcik Prom tickets will be on sale this week in the Activities Office for $15. Do not forget to buy yours and help support the Junior Class, as well as participating in the fun night planned for May 3rd!
