The Sheboygan South Jazz Program is pleased to announce their 9th annual semiformal big band dance! A dance featuring live music by the jazz ensembles of Sheboygan South and the pro band ‘SwingShift’ is set up as a community dance for people of all ages. Not sure how to dance? Come and practice (for free, with the purchase of dance ticket) in fun setting on Tuesday, April 1st and Thursday, April 3rd from 7-8:30 p.m. in the SHS Commons. Just enjoy live music? Feel free to find a chair, just listen and enjoy the performances! The dance is Saturday, April 5th from 7-11 p.m. in the beautiful Sheboygan South Commons. Advance tickets are $15 for adults ($20 at the door) and $10 for students. Tickets can be purchased from any South Jazz members, South High School’s Offices and DuBois Formalwear.
The Spring Swing is another fun activity for students to get involved in during this busy time. With Prom, Relay for Life and other things, the Spring Swing is a different activity that all students can enjoy.
The students that perform at the Spring Swing, members of Jazz I and Jazz II, spend a lot of time preparing for the event. Some students practice individually while others have practice twice a week. Sophomore Paige Bohman said she practices with Jazz II every Tuesday and Friday morning.
Senior Stevie Lopez, member of Jazz I, says he recommends the dance to South High students. “It is a fun and lively experience and a chance to do something different in the year. This also helps promote live music.”
The live music is something different from all other South High dances. Usually there is just a DJ, however at the Spring Swing there are multiple groups performing for the dances. Another difference is the style of dancing done at the Spring Swing.
Many kids enjoy fast dancing at Prom and Homecoming, however when students take the dance lessons prior to the Spring Swing, they learn classic dance steps such as the two step and the fox trot. This is an adjustment for some kids, but many enjoy it!
The Spring Swing is a great kick off to the spring season. If you’re looking for something to do and want to experience something new, support your SHS Jazz bands. Buy a ticket and learn some new dance moves to use at the Spring Swing, this Saturday!
