Sheboygan has now entered the home stretch of the winter season. The weather is cold, and kids everywhere are looking for something to relieve their boredom. But look no further. Just minutes away from downtown is a place where you can go for endless hours of fun. No, I don’t mean the mall, I mean Kiwanis Park.
Perfect for sledding in this wintery wonderland, many high schoolers forget that this place even exists, or are too scared to slide down its steep slopes. Many times you can find families there on the not-so-cold days, or like I discovered, grown men deciding to take a chance at 9:30 PM. Kiwanis Park has proved that you can never grow out of a love for sledding.
While I like to think of myself as an occasional risk taker, standing up at the top of the tallest part of Kiwanis and looking down the drop reminded me just how far up I really was. Yet, I took the plunge anyway. YOLO right? The slopes are steep, and the snow was already slick from the ghosts of sledders past. Every dip I would get at least a foot of air, sometimes more, and then would come pounding back, bracing myself for the next one.
It takes four times as long to go back up the hill as it does to go down (for me at least) and yet it’s worth it every time. For those of you not quite ready to dare the tallest peak, the outer edges of the curve provide less treacherous dips that are still just as much fun. And if you get tired of all the up and down walking, there is plenty of space for activities at the bottom, just make sure to look out for the incoming sledders. You can also check out the slopes at Vollrath Bowl on the Northside for more sledding fun! Review by Briana Wojcik
