This Saturday, December 7th marks the 12th annual Sheboygan Walk for Warmth, held in the South High Commons. The Walk for Warmth brings awareness to the community about helping people who are in need of energy and heating assistance from Wisconsin Public Service.
In years past, pledges have been taken to raise money for the heating assistance of those who couldn’t afford to pay for it. According to science teacher Nicole Schumacher, an adviser of the walk, “The past two years we haven’t had pledges,” and later added, “We do it to raise awareness.” Pledges are no longer taken because of the decrease in need from the Wisconsin Public Service. Even though the need has decreased in the past few years, it isn’t gone and it is still very important to raise awareness. The walk is a great opportunity for students to get involved and raise awareness for something important, at no cost to them.
The walk is taking place from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. and is about two miles long. If you would like a free t-shirt, you can bring at least one nonperishable food item to donate. All food items will be donated to the Redwing Pantry which helps students’ families right here at South. Those who are still interested in the walk can sign up the morning of the walk from 10:15 to 10:45. Afterwards there will be refreshments to help warm up. If you’re looking for something to do this Saturday, bundle up and head on over to participate and have a great time at the Walk for Warmth. Story by Emma Sharpe
