There are many new faces here at South, but there is one face that is familiar, just in a not so usual place.
Michael Rank Sr., a health and physical education teacher, has taken over the role as head coach of the varsity boy’s basketball team. Rank states, “I am honored and truly blessed to have this opportunity.”
Rank has remembered playing basketball for the majority of his life, as far back as he can remember. A hoop was mounted at his childhood home, where he spent hours shooting. “I remember shoveling the snow to clear out the driveway so I could shoot”, he said. Being teacher and a coach was always a goal, as he began to coach summer leagues at South preceding his graduation. He went on, “I knew I wanted to be a teacher and coach a sport. To me, teaching and coaching go hand in hand.”
Rank has been waiting for 20 years for this opportunity and is looking forward to running every aspect of the boy’s basketball program. He is planning on positively influencing the players both off and on the court. “Who they are as people, will be far more important than who they were as basketball players or their record here at South High.”, said the new Redwing Head Coach.
Rank looks at the Redwing Way program as a philosophy that is very important to the school and the athletes within. He reminds us that students know they are always welcome to come to him for advice or help during the day as a coach or a teacher because he is in the building. He gives great guidance to all students by saying, “My advice to all students, get involved at South High School.”
