KICKIN’ IT–Senior Jason Dekarske kicks a free kick during the September 14th game against North High School. Dekarske was a captain for the Redwings this year and a strong leader for the rest of his team. North and South High school face off this week in three sports: Girls Volleyball, Boys Soccer and Football. Any time North and South meet, it means something more to people than playing any other team. This game not only decides who is the best in the city of Sheboygan for that year, but it also means having pride in your school. The rivalry goes back to the infamous basketball games at the Armory and the intensity of the rivalry hasn’t died since. Despite the intense competition between both sides of town, there are many important events in which these two schools come together as one. Throughout the entire season, the most frequently asked question for competitors is, “How did you do against North?”, which usually outweighs the question of what their conference record is. Winning or losing against North not only means a lot to the competitor, but a lot to the alumni and people partial to the south side. Tuesday night, North and South boys soccer played each other in the first round of Regionals. Having to play North in any game is important as it is, but playing with your season on the line is a different story. Also on Tuesday night, Sophomore Jessika McNellis played in her first varsity North/South volleyball game Tuesday and said it was unlike any game she has played in before. McNellis said, “It’s an exciting experience. There’s so much energy and it’s fun to see the crowd get excited.” These games not only bring out the competitiveness in the players, but also the students and fans. Signs are made, faces are painted and school spirit is at an all time high when these games are played. They bring a sense of unity and pride to the school, and everyone strives to do their very best, both as a fan and a participant. The final rivalry game this week is the North/South football game this Friday, October 18th. This game is each of the team’s last game together as a team and possibly one of the most important games of each of their seasons. North (1-7) and South (2-6) football teams have been preparing for this game all season and it is safe to say both teams are ready for this rivalry. “We are very ready and it means a lot to us because it’s our last chance to show everyone that we are a better team than our record shows,” said Senior Mitchell Martinez. Although neither of their records is outstanding, South is favored to win Friday’s game, and Martinez believes his team is capable of doing so. Periodically during the year, North and South take a break from the idea of being rivals and come together for various reasons. During the football game, the teams and students will be supporting Breast Cancer Awareness by wearing pink. All fans are encouraged to join in the unified effort for this special and important cause. Also happening this fall is the North/South musical, The Mikado, which will be shown November 1st-3rd and November 7th-9th in the North High auditorium. The two schools join together and perform musicals every fall including Aida, Les Miserables, and the Titanic the past few years. Senior Alisha Ziegler enjoys coming together with North for musicals every Fall, “When we’re together, you can’t even tell we’re from different schools. We get along so well.” The locations of both schools are put aside, and these students combine into one to create an outstanding musical every year. Despite the battles and fierce competition throughout the school year, these two school communities come together for the last time to celebrate their memories and accomplishments of their past four years of high school. Every June, North and South seniors come together and walk side by side down the steps of the unique graduation setting of Vollrath Bowl. Putting the rivalry and the past competitions aside, these cross-town rivals unite as one student body, walking out of the past and into their future together. But, before rivalries can be put aside Redwing football takes the field Friday against the North High Raiders. Be sure to wear pink in support of Breast Cancer, game starts at 7pm at South High.
