As we celebrate Memorial Day, we reflect on past, present, and future Redwings that have gone on–or will go on–to serve our country. When senior year comes around, many students find themselves searching for what they plan to do after high school comes to an end. For a select few students, enlisting in the military is the route they wish to take–a different pathway than many of their peers. We already have ten seniors this year that are enlisting in the military after high school is over, and still many to decide after graduation to still enlist. Senior Preston Walker stated, “All the benefits of the military and being able to serve my country. And also my recruiter played a huge part in my interest“ when he was deciding whether or not to enlist in the Marines. Walker has been interested in joining the military due to family members having served our country and to expand his options for plans after high school. He now plans to enlist right after graduation and serve our country for years to come. By enlisting in the military, each branch has physical training (PT) in which the individual branches all work out together. Senior Zachary Haag said, “PT has taught me the importance to give it my all and to push myself to become stronger mentally and physically. It’s also shown me that teamwork is needed between my fellow recruits and I.” Haag decided to enlist in the Marines recently due to the amazing opportunities that it offers for recruits after boot camp and service. He hopes to travel the world and earn skills to better himself that he might have not otherwise gotten. Senior Sean Reinemann is the “squad leader” of all the Marine recruits, this means he is in charge of them during PT and is a role model for the recruits. Reinemann said, “I hope to make a difference in the world while also serving my country honorably.” Reinemann was scheduled to leave for boot camp the same day as graduation originally, but has now been back scheduled to leave a few days later. Senior Isaias Ruiz also recently enlisted in the Marines. Ruiz said, “I decided to enlist in the Marines because of financial needs, but also to make a change in the world by serving my country as a Marine.” He found out about all the amazing things that occur when you enlist, such as, the financial benefits, being able to travel the world, and to serve his country nobly. He was influenced by another Marine recruit and friend, Carson Ostermann, a senior from North High School. Senior Keith Nachtwey is enlisted to go into the Army after high school graduation. He said, “I hope to become a courageous man and to fight for those who can’t. By entering into the Army, I hope to do something great for my country and to make my family proud”. Senior Hailey Bohlman enlisted into the Army as well–she hopes to make her family proud while doing what she loves. She plans to take the career titled as 68T Animal Care Specialist. An Animal Care Specialist is primarily responsible for the prevention and control of diseases transmitted from animal to man, as well as the comprehensive care for government-owned animals. She stated, “I joined to be able serve my country, and because of the awesome G.I. Bill that comes with enlisting. It’s basically money for education after I’m done serving.” Senior Dusty Hungerford said, “I really just want to go out into the world and help our country in the battles that it is facing now, and by joining the Army, I can make that difference.” Hungerford started his interest in the Army in his junior year, and he decided to put his all in getting into shape for the Army. He plans to become a 12R Interior Technician after basic training. For these seniors, this is the pathway they will follow after graduation. These students are demonstrating the Redwing Way and serving our country nobly. If you have any questions or are interested in enlisting in the military, contact the local recruiting center or talk to one of these seniors to help figure out what to do next.
