Are you a terrible athlete? Can you finish the mile in record time? If you answered yes to either of these questions, RELAY IS FOR YOU! Everyone has been affected by cancer in some way whether it be someone in your family with cancer or a family friend. It is a very tough, painful, expensive journey that can be shortened, but the American Cancer Society needs your help to raise funds for cancer research! In 2015, there were 32,700 new cancer cases alone in Wisconsin. In the United States, there were 1,658,370 new cases and that number has already gone down 7,170 from the previous year (Cancer Facts & Figures 2015). Relay for Life has been helping the American Cancer Society raise funds for cancer research for 30 years. This amazing event was founded by Gordon “Gordy” Klatt, M.D. and has raised over $5 billion since 1986. Now, South High needs YOUR help raising money at our Relay event. Relay for Life is a fun filled event with lots of activities and things to do. Senior Kassidy Murphy explained the cool things she saw in past relays. “It was outside during the day, was warm outside, there was a huge balloon arc at the start, snow cone machine outside and a bunch of trinkets to buy like bracelets and there were also raffles,” said Murphy. Though cancer is a touchy topic, the heartfelt stories from survivors and loved ones really bring everyone at the event together in ways that no one can explain. Junior Lauren Vega shared how doing something for such a wonderful cause made her feel. “It made me feel really good to know that what I was doing went towards such a wonderful cause.” If you are interested in signing up for South High’s Relay for Life, please look at the steps below. Donations may be taken online or in person. A neat way to collect donations is to get a “Scratch ‘n’ Give” card. These cards look like lottery scratch offs and are about the size of a large post card. There are 30 circles that are eligible to be scratched off and each one has a dollar amount, $1, $5, or $10. If a family member or friend is willing to donate up to $10, they will scratch off a circle and will donate the amount that is shown. If you are interested in getting a Scratch ‘n’ Give card, please contact Zoe Schrameyer, Bonita Priebe, Melanie Anderson, or Hollis Rammer. How to sign up for Relay for Life:
