With the holidays right around the corner, South High Student Council held its Fall Food Drive. Each year, South partners with the Salvation Army to help fill the food pantries for families in need. This is has been a tradition that Student Council has held for many years. “For our Homeroom it was a train effect. Being in Mr. T’s homeroom, we won the Noodles and Company by each donating more and more items each day.” stated Senior Mariana Perez. South High has always been a big supporter to the Salvation Army. Each year South holds both a food and clothing drive to support the Salvation Army during the winter season. The food drive ran 14 days and food was collected during Homerooms each day. Each homeroom was competing to collect the most items. The winning homeroom would get Noodles and Company to cater them the following week. Of course, this brought out all different sides of homeroom. Helping out the community is something that should not always be rewarded. “I think it is really important for those of us who are fortunate enough to have dinner on the table every night to be aware of and help those who don’t have that luxury. Hosting food drives is a great way to help our community members who may be in a tight situation” stated Senior Melanie Anderson. 1700 non-perishable food items were donated to the Salvation Army to help feeds families this holiday season. Usually, this time of year is the hardest time for families because of the winter just around the corner. Filling the food pantry with that many items can feed up to 60 families with a meal for the holidays. Many may think that is not a lot, but it really is. It helps out one meal a family cannot afford or cannot put out on the table. It helps bring a holiday smile to these families. As many of us sit down and are thankful for the cooked meals our families make, many are thankful for all the items our school has donated to them. Donating to the food bank can really help families, and is a great way to help our community. Reach out a helping hand and donate to our community. “It is important that the students learn to be responsible for and to others”, stated Student Council Adviser Jon Schrank. The food drive is held once a year but that is not the only time you have to donate. You can always stop down at the Salvation Army building and donate food as well. Hunger strikes at all points of the year and not just winter. Even if the school does not have a food drive, there is still a food bank needing to be filled. Thank you to all that have donated to the Fall Food Drive this year. Let’s try to fill the food bank all year and fill the food bank more next year! Just one item can go a long way for a family. The food drive is just one of them many ways that South High is such an amazing help to our community.
