Homework, jobs, and sports can get in the way of staying active in school. Are you looking for more ways to get involved in your community during the school year? Now that second semester is starting, and you are finally starting to get involved do you have some free time? and are you wondering how to get more hours for community service? Many students at South High School struggle with the same problem. They are looking for community service hours or something fun to do with their free time but does not know how to get involved.

There are many different and unique activities and clubs at South High School that you can join to get more involved and even receive volunteer hours for. Student council and Red Team are just two examples of the many programs which South High offers that will positively benefit you outside of the school day. Rotary club is another service based club, it helps and encourages students to get involved in the community events while allowing them to pick and choose what they do in the community.

Student council President senior Lizeth Lara discussed how joining student council or rotary club can benefit somebody. Student Council offers many opportunities for students to create close friendships and teach students many important life lessons. Lizeth said,

“The bonds you create with other people in student council or exec board create a loving family. The many fun activities and hours spent with one another, you almost forget you are getting hours for school. It honestly feels just like hanging out with friends even though you are getting everything done you need to.”

Student Council has tons of school-oriented volunteer opportunities. Homecoming week is one of the biggest and most popular examples of when students are the most active. If you are apart of Student council you can help create fun spirit weeks, set up fundraisers, and help shape the school’s community. Student council strives to make sure that everyone stays involved and gets an equal say in how they want their homecoming week and other events to go. Even though homecoming week is just one example, student council also directs their attention to all the other spirit weeks and other activities which happen throughout the entire school year.

class of 2018 president, Amy Cooper, also believes that an involved school is a happy school. That being and staying involved and staying active in school sports, rotary club and or student council is the key to a happy and progressive school. Amy Cooper stated,

“Getting involved and putting yourself out there is beneficial for not only you but the school and everyone else who attends it. When you put yourself out there and decide to benefit the school you’re making a better environment for everyone. The friendships and bonds you create will be worth it in the long run. I highly recommend to incoming freshmen and to students who feel like getting more involved ask about joining student council or joining the many activities South High offers.”

If you ever want to make a difference in your school and see change- joining one or more of the many clubs and organizations which South High School offers is a good idea for you. Simply joining to get community service hours will still be appreciated by the supervisors, giving back to the community is the goal. Ask somebody in your school how they got involved, and make a change!
